2007 Arcanum Toscana

2007 Arcanum Toscana

Wine & Spirits Magazine 93pts: "Jess Jackson and Barbara Banke purchased this estate in 1994. The property, near the town of Castelnuovo Berardenga, focuses on Bordeaux varietal blends, this one built on cabernet franc (51 percent), merlot and cabernet sauvignon. It’s more vinous than many super-Tuscans, opening with air to full-on richness, not heavy but complete. New oak scents give way to brisk notes of forest floor and black olives, finishing floral and bright. It leaves the mouth feeling refreshed, with hints of anise in a zesty fragrance that lasts. An intriguing interpretation of the Tuscan hills." (Rating for Arcanum 2007)

The 2007 was not widely rated, but was considered to be an even better growing year than 2008.  Below is the 2008 rating for comparision purposes.

96 Points The Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Arcanum is a monumental achievement and my favorite wine in an already impossibly impressive collection. The blend sees Cabernet Franc (77%), Merlot and a very small part of Cabernet Sauvignon. Like many Tuscany growers, Tenuta di Arceno is betting on Cabernet Franc’s performance in the warmer corners of Tuscany. The integration here is absolutely beautiful and the wine glides smoothly over the palate with the perfect balance of extraction, glycerin, residual sugar and acidity. The aromas span the spectrum, from bright cherry to dark chocolate. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2030."

Winemaker's Notes:

On the nose, this wine shows black plum, blackberry and cassis notes, with integrated toast, clove, potpourri and cola. The fruit flavors come through on the palate, carrying forward the spice and rustic aromas. It shows wonderful ripe black cherry, raspberry and violet notes, along with spicy, yet floral notes of lavender, anise and dark chocolate. Acidity is moderate and highlights the earthly mineral-driven terroir. This wine develops into a rich and generous example of what Cabernet Franc-based blends can achieve in the Tuscan hills.

Blend: 51% Cabernet Franc, 32% Merlot, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon
